5-carboxylcytosine is the final oxidized derivative of 5-methylcytosine, a type of DNA methylation. 5-methylcytosine is oxidized to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine which is then oxidized to 5-formylcytosine and later to 5-carboxylcytosine. These oxidations are catalyzed by the Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) enzyme family. 5-carboxylcytosine has been shown to cause reduced fidelity of RNA Polymerase II. Decreased levels of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine has been found in some cancers.
