Screw thread vials & closures for HPLC, GC, MS applications
There’s a Thermo Scientific screw top vial for every HPLC, GC, MS instrument, application, and budget.
- Our screw top clear and amber glass vials and plastic screw top vials are available in 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, and 13mm screw threads.
- The most commonly used vials are 9mm, 12x32mm screw thread vials. A 12x32mm vial is also known as 1.5mL, 1.8mL, and 2.0mL vials by different manufacturers.
- Microsampling options include using a one-piece vial with fused insert molded into the vial, or using a separate insert placed into a vial.
- Our 13mm vials are 4mL vials for larger volumes and/or sample storage.
Screw top vials are one of several vial types used in autosamplers for automated sample injection into HPLC, GC, and MS analytical instruments. Vial type, size, dimensions, and shape of choice will depend on autosampler instrument compatibility.

About 8mm (8-425) standard opening screw vials
- 2mL, 12x32mm standard opening vials
- 8-425 thread finish
- Smaller opening (5mm ID) has less solvent contact with septum
- Superior quality 1st hydrolytic class glass (Type 1) in clear and amber
- Meets all requirements of Pharm. US, EU, JPN
- Freezes well
- Compatible with standard GC and HPLC autosamplers, as well as older autosamplers.
8mm microsampling options
- Use 5mm OD inserts for standard 8mm vials

Cap and septa closures for 8mm screw vials
- Ensure the closure type is compatible with solvents and method
- 8mm open top caps can be used with any of our 8mm septa
- Polypropylene caps are chemically inert and suitable for most chromatography applications
- Flanged caps are particularly suitable for many Japanese autosamplers
- Pre-assembled caps and septa are convenient and minimize contamination from handling

9mm microsampling options
- Microvials (with fused inserts) and High Recovery vials (internal vial shaped for microsampling), do not need separate inserts
- Use 6mm inserts for microsampling from standard 9mm vials
- Polyspring inserts are self-aligning and provide a cushion against needle contact
- Precision point insert minimizes residual sample loss

- Caps with bonded septa resist dislodging during injection when using large diameter blunt needles
